The 4-Day Bushiyi Trail is a curated ascent designed for those who believe the journey is just as important as the summit. By adding an extra day to the mountain's most direct route, this trek balances the physical challenge of reaching 4,321m with the time needed to truly inhabit the landscape. You will transition from the emerald canopy of the primary rainforest to the golden silence of the high-altitude moorlands at a pace that prioritizes both acclimatization and awe. It is the perfect choice for hikers seeking a soulful, steady, and deeply immersive mountain experience.

Day 1

This is a “power day” to get you deep into the wilderness. We start at the Kapkwai Forest Exploration Centre, hiking through thick montane forest. We stop for a well-earned lunch at the historic Tutum Cave, a massive lava shelter. By evening, we reach Kajeri Camp, perched on a ridge with views of the plains below.

Day 2

The landscape shifts dramatically today. We leave the forest behind and enter the heath and moorland zones. You’ll be surrounded by the iconic Giant Lobelias and “Everlasting Flowers.” Simu Valley Camp is one of the most scenic spots on the mountain, nestled near alpine streams.

Day 3

Today we conquer the summit. A steady climb leads us to the rim of the world’s largest volcanic caldera before we reach Wagagai Peak (4,321m). After celebrating at the highest point of Mount Elgon, we begin our descent on the “Bushiyi side,” camping at Dubi Camp with panoramic views of the Bududa valleys.

Dat 4

Our final day is a long descent through the bamboo zone and fertile farmlands. We stop for a quick lunch at Shilonko Camp before the final push to the Bushiyi Ranger Post. You’ll be greeted by the warm culture of the Bagisu people as you complete your trans-mountain journey.
